The Tide Pod Teen Challenge

When I was little, I played with paper dolls. These dolls had paper clothes, paper shoes, paper handbags, and some even had paper combs and brushes. They had the semblance of everything that real people were supposed to have.

Some were fashioned as adults and had children. A full paper family.

This was fine for playing… for make-believe. But I knew this was not real life. This was but a shadow of the real thing.

There is a new craze that has gone viral on social media – The Tide Pod Teen Challenge. In this challenge, teens are to eat or at least bite into the detergent pods.

Now we all know that detergent is toxic. There are warnings on the containers to keep these colorful pods away from young children as there have been accidental ingestion and deaths of some children. There have also been cases of elderly dementia patients ingesting these detergent pods and dying from the toxins.

But we are not talking about accidents with these teens. They are doing this on purpose as a challenge, live on social media. Of course, there have been deaths attributed to this practice, but that has not been enough to stop these teens. One teen, who was alone and beginning to feel side effects, said that he’d probably made a big mistake and would need to go to the hospital, but that did not stop him from doing it again!

Are they merely seeking attention and notoriety?

This phenomenon is only one of many crazes that have swept our teens.

I asked one teenager why he had decided to have his ears gauged. He said it was for the pain.

He needed to feel the pain to know that he was alive.

In this same vein, we have cutting. This seems to be more prevalent among girls than boys, although I know some boys engage in this practice. In addition to cutting themselves, they are playing the choking game just to feel something.

It appears that many in this generation are dull in their consciousness, dead in their souls, and dead in their spirits! Their lives appear to be a shadowy existence, void of true substance.

Parents, it is our responsibility to guard and protect our children by paying attention to details and the latest fads and crazes. We need to be good stewards over our children.

Heavenly Father, we realize that our society is filled with fads, crazes, and landmines that our poised to destroy our children… our families. The enemy has strategies that dull their senses and pushes them closer and closer to the edge of no return. But we know that You have given us children as a heritage to honor You. Teach us how to be vigilant gate keepers over the souls of our children. Adoni, You said that our children would be taught of You and by You, and great would be their peace. We pray for the manifestation of that promise in our children now. We speak life into them, peace over them, and we plead the Blood of Jesus over them now. Our children belong to You. Sharpen their minds and spirits and give them a hunger for You. We declare that Jesus is the Lord of our children! Amen!
